Conservation Efforts
In 1998, the state of California developed a recovery plan of the San Joaquin valley. This plan included the following recommendations to protect essential habitat of the kit fox in order to save its population:
A five-year review of the San Joaquin kit fox was completed by the Service in 2009. Upon the review it was discovered that the kit fox populations were becoming more fragmented and some had disappeared altogether.

In 2006, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), completed a conservation assessment of the San Joaquin kit fox. The kit fox was assigned a priority number of 3C based off of a 1-18 ranking system where 1 is the highest-ranked recovery priority and 18 is the lowest (Service, 2009). This value indicates that the kit fox faces a high degree of threat and has a high potential for recovery (The “C” indicates conflict with construction or other development projects or other forms of economic activity).
